When Robert Karplus was suddenly and prematurely forced to end his work at the University of California, Berkeley, all of us who had worked with Bob were devastated by the loss. Shortly thereafter Bob was honored by the initiation of a formal lecture called the Robert Karplus Lecture that was to be given annually at the national meeting of the National Association of Science Teachers. I was privileged to give one of these lectures. Contribution to the Field of Education as a Whole At the close of the decade of the 1990's, and the beginning of a new century and millennium, one finds among the dominant themes of scholarly educationalliterature, abundant references to the constructivist movement.
An examination of teachers' behavior also provides evidence of Bob's legacy to science education. Teachers' participation in the experimental phase of SCIS changed teachers' visions of teaching. When I visited and interviewed SCIS teachers, I still remember being astonished by their serious-yet-positive and global thought about the value of first-hand experience for advancing children's understanding of complex concepts, not just in science but also in other subjects like mathematics and social studies.
